Tutoring

We tutor students as young as three years old through college and beyond. We can work in-person or online. Soon after each session you can expect a detailed email explaining what was covered, recommendations including problems to work on, and future plans. We use several models of tutoring.

  • Tutor-driven We use our materials to take students through a class. A student might be on a sports team and unable to attend our classes, or a student might need help in getting through some material to support current math that they are studying with us or in their regular school. Almost all of our tutoring through middle school is tutor-driven.
  • Student-driven Some students come to us to support their current math studying, whether at our school or elsewhere. Typically they send us class notes and homework that they need help with and we assist them to gain mastery. Much of our high school and college tutoring is student-driven.
  • Hybrid A hybrid model is student-driven but when we have time, we offer our materials and problems to supplement and grow the student's knowledge. For example a student might bring us weekly homework but on weeks where they have no problems, we might guide them through material to strengthen their understanding or preview material that is to come. Hybrid tutoring works well for high school and college students who like to meet regularly but don't always have questions.

Pre-K through K

Elementary through High School

Elementary through High School

With our earliest learners we focus on experiential learning such as math walks and storytelling. Here are links to a few examples.

  • Considering measuring in a grocery store
  • Noticing parity (even/odd), symmetry, and patterns in a garden
  • Going on an art walk
  • Doing data science by counting traffic at an intersection or produce being stocked at a grocery store
  • Exploring cityscapes and architecture

Most of the tutoring that we do is with 1st graders through high school seniors. Families with 1st graders who want to get a jumpstart with mathematical literacy through students who need extra help or who want to dive deeper into subjects like elementary school math, algebra, geometry, calculus, linear algebra, statistics, or beyond can work with us

1-on-1. We can help students prepare for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or AP tests. Occasionally we get requests to work with a small group of friends, which we're happy to do. We also love math walks with elementary school-aged children.

College

We have staff with background to tutor at all college levels and work with everybody from students who don't specialize in math but need it for their major and may be struggling, through math majors who want to broaden or deepen their understanding of topology, analysis, number theory, or other subjects. We can help ground theory that is being learned with examples from real-world applications and practical examples that can help motivate some students.

Are you a business owner who needs help with setting up predictive business models on a spreadsheet? Are you a high school graduate working at a job where you need to learn some statistics? Are you a professor of anthropology and want some help interpreting numeric data sets from other researchers? We can help.

Consider other Tutors as well

We care more about your getting a good match for math (or language arts) fun and excellence than necessarily working with us. We are confident in our abilities but encourage you to also contact other tutors to find one to delight you in best meeting your needs.

  • Locally in the Chapel Hill-Durham-Raleigh area of North Carolina we know highly-regarded math tutor Cliff Chapin. We've enjoyed working with veteran teacher Meg Millard. Other math tutors we've heard good things about include Harrison Kmiec and Jackie Stone.
  • Emily Brewer, our language arts teacher, independently offers tutoring. We don't know many other language arts tutors but like what we have read about The Beehive Backyard Literacy & Play.

We hope that you'll also consider us!
